Use a borescope camera to see inside the wall

4

Drill a small hole low on the wall and insert a borescope camera to visually inspect the framing. Pan the camera left and right to identify studs, wiring, plumbing, and insulation. This eliminates all guesswork.

Why It Works

You are looking directly at the framing. There is no inference or detection — you see exactly where studs are and what else is inside the wall cavity.

Tips

  • Basic USB borescopes that plug into a phone cost $20-30 and work surprisingly well
  • Drill the hole near the baseboard where it can be hidden or easily patched
  • Overkill for hanging a picture, but invaluable before cutting into a wall, running electrical, or mounting heavy items
  • Also reveals potential hazards like wires and pipes near your intended drill location
