Use Two Squares for Dual-Axis Alignment
Set up two squares at 90 degrees to each other on the workpiece to provide visual alignment reference in both the left-right and front-back planes simultaneously.
How It Works
A single square only confirms alignment in one plane. By placing two squares perpendicular to each other (one checking left-right tilt, the other checking front-back tilt), you can visually confirm the drill is plumb in both axes before and during drilling. This is a significant improvement over the single-square method and approaches the accuracy of a physical guide.
Instructions
- Mark and center-punch your drilling point
- Place one combination square or speed square flat on the workpiece with its blade standing vertical, positioned about 1 inch to the side of the drilling mark
- Place the second square perpendicular to the first, about 1 inch behind the drilling mark
- Clamp both squares in position if possible, or have an assistant hold them
- Position the drill bit on the center-punched mark
- Looking from the front, align the drill bit parallel to the first square's blade
- Looking from the side, align the drill bit parallel to the second square's blade
- Start drilling at slow speed, checking alignment against both squares during the first few rotations
- Once the bit is established in the material, the hole guides itself
Tips
- Combination squares with machined blades provide the most accurate reference edges
- Small magnetic squares can be stuck directly to the drill bit (if it is steel) as an alternative
- This method works well on both flat surfaces and edges of boards
- For repeated holes at the same angle, clamp the squares in place and use them as a fixed jig
- A torpedo level placed on top of the drill body provides additional confirmation
Common Mistakes
- Placing both squares in the same plane, which only checks alignment in one axis
- Not center-punching the hole location, which allows the bit to walk as you focus on alignment
- Moving the squares accidentally while positioning the drill
- Relying entirely on the squares without also using your natural sense of vertical — the squares confirm alignment, but your body position and line of sight are the primary guides
