Give sponge baths until the umbilical cord falls off

4

Until the umbilical cord stump falls off and the area heals (typically 1-3 weeks after birth), give your newborn sponge baths only. Lay the baby on a soft, flat surface with a towel underneath. Use a warm, damp washcloth to gently clean one area at a time, keeping the rest of the body wrapped in a towel for warmth. Clean the face first, then the body, and the diaper area last.

Why It Works

The AAP recommends sponge baths for newborns because submerging the umbilical cord stump in water can delay healing and increase infection risk. Sponge baths keep the stump dry while still keeping the baby clean.

Tips

  • Gather all supplies before starting so you never leave the baby unattended
  • Use plain warm water for the face; mild, fragrance-free baby soap sparingly on the body
  • Work quickly to prevent the baby from getting cold
  • Pat dry thoroughly, especially in skin folds where moisture can cause irritation
