Start at slow speed with firm, steady pressure
4
Set your drill to the lowest speed setting and apply firm, steady downward pressure as you start. Let the bit establish a groove before gradually increasing speed. Never let the bit spin freely on the surface without cutting.
Why It Works
High speed on initial contact causes the bit to bounce and skate. Low speed with pressure forces the cutting edges to engage the material. Once a small groove is established, the bit is captured and won't wander.
Tips
- Most bit-walking happens because people start too fast — slow starts solve 80% of slipping problems
- Use the drill's lowest torque setting on a cordless drill to prevent the bit from spinning too freely
- On metal, start so slowly you can count individual bit rotations
- Combine this technique with a center punch for near-perfect results every time
