Patch medium holes with a self-adhesive mesh patch
4
For holes 1-4 inches across (like doorknob damage or old anchor holes), stick a self-adhesive fiberglass mesh patch over the hole. Apply joint compound over the mesh with a wide putty knife, feathering the edges outward. Let dry, apply a second coat, sand smooth, prime, and paint.
Why It Works
The mesh patch bridges the hole and provides a reinforcing surface for the compound to bond to. Multiple thin coats build up a smooth, strong repair that becomes invisible once painted.
Tips
- Apply 2-3 thin coats rather than one thick coat — thick layers crack and shrink
- Feather each coat wider than the last (6, 8, then 10 inches) to blend the repair into the wall
- Use a wider knife for each successive coat to create a gradual transition
- Kits with mesh patch, compound, and putty knife are available at hardware stores for $5-10
