Probe with a Thin Nail (Trial and Error)

2

Description

A less precise method involving making tiny exploratory holes to physically locate the stud.

Recipe/Instructions

  1. Estimate Location: Use the knock test or outlet location method to get an approximate idea of where a stud might be.
  2. Probe Near Baseboard: Choose a spot low on the wall near the baseboard (where holes are less visible or easily covered).
  3. Use Thin Nail: Gently tap a very thin finishing nail or push a stiff wire into the drywall at your estimated location.
  4. Feel for Resistance: If the nail goes in easily with little resistance, you've missed the stud (you're in hollow drywall). If it hits solid resistance after penetrating the drywall (about 1/2 inch), you've likely hit the stud.
  5. Adjust and Repeat: If you missed, move horizontally about 1/2 inch to an inch and try again until you hit solid wood.
  6. Once found, you can measure 16/24 inches to find the next studs. Patch the small probe holes afterward.

What makes the Dish Special
