Manage common colds and upper respiratory infections at home
5
Most infant colds are caused by viruses (primarily rhinovirus) and resolve on their own within 7-10 days. Focus on comfort care: keep nasal passages clear with saline drops and a bulb syringe or NoseFrida, run a cool-mist humidifier in the nursery, and offer frequent breastmilk or formula feeds to maintain hydration.
When to Call the Pediatrician
- Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) in any baby under 3 months old -- this requires immediate medical evaluation
- Difficulty breathing, flared nostrils, or rib retractions
- Refusal to feed or significantly decreased wet diapers
- Symptoms lasting longer than 10 days or worsening after initial improvement
- Thick green or yellow nasal discharge persisting beyond 10 days (may indicate bacterial sinusitis)
Tips
- Never give over-the-counter cold medicine to children under 2 years old per AAP guidance
- Elevating the head of the crib mattress slightly can help with congestion -- place a rolled towel under the mattress, never loose items in the crib
- Honey is not safe for babies under 12 months due to botulism risk
- Babies average 6-8 colds per year in the first two years; this is normal and helps build immunity
- Always consult your pediatrician before giving any medication to an infant
