Apply zinc oxide barrier cream at every diaper change

5

Apply a thick layer of zinc oxide cream (at least 10% concentration) to clean, dry skin at every diaper change. The cream forms a physical barrier between the baby's skin and moisture, preventing further irritation and allowing the skin to heal underneath.

Why It Works

Zinc oxide is the active ingredient recommended by the AAP and most pediatric dermatologists for diaper rash treatment and prevention. It creates a waterproof barrier that repels urine and stool while allowing the skin to breathe. It also has mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Products like Desitin Maximum Strength (40% zinc oxide) or Boudreaux's Butt Paste are widely available.

Tips

  • Apply the cream generously -- it should be thick enough that you cannot see skin through it
  • Do not wipe off the old layer completely at each change; remove only the soiled portion and add more cream on top
  • For stubborn rash, use a higher concentration (40%) zinc oxide product
  • Petroleum jelly (e.g., Vaseline) works as an alternative barrier for mild rash or prevention
  • Avoid products containing fragrance, alcohol, or boric acid on irritated skin
