Apply zinc oxide barrier cream at every diaper change

Why It Works

It creates a waterproof barrier that repels urine and stool while allowing the skin to breathe. It also has mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Products like Desitin Maximum Strength (40% zinc oxide) or Boudreaux's Butt Paste are widely available.

Tips

• Apply the cream generously -- it should be thick enough that you cannot see skin through it
• Do not wipe off the old layer completely at each change; remove only the soiled portion and add more cream on top
• For stubborn rash, use a higher concentration (40%) zinc oxide product
• Petroleum jelly (e.g., Vaseline) works as an alternative barrier for mild rash or prevention
• Avoid products containing fragrance, alcohol, or boric acid on irritated skin
