Treat diaper rash with barrier creams and frequent changes

4

Diaper rash is one of the most common infant skin conditions, caused by prolonged contact with wet or soiled diapers, friction, and skin sensitivity. The primary treatment is keeping the skin clean and dry: change diapers frequently (every 2-3 hours and immediately after bowel movements), gently clean with warm water and a soft cloth, and apply a thick layer of barrier cream containing zinc oxide or petroleum jelly at every change.

When It Might Be Something Else

  • Rash with bright red borders, satellite spots, or affecting skin folds may be a yeast (candida) infection -- this requires antifungal treatment prescribed by your pediatrician
  • Rash that does not improve after 3-4 days of diligent home care warrants a pediatrician visit
  • Blisters, open sores, or bleeding indicate a more severe irritation that needs medical attention

Tips

  • Allow diaper-free time daily to let skin air-dry completely -- even 10-15 minutes helps
  • Pat the area dry gently; never rub irritated skin
  • Avoid baby wipes containing alcohol or fragrance on irritated skin -- use plain warm water instead
  • Apply barrier cream generously -- it should be thick enough that you cannot see the skin through it
  • Zinc oxide creams (such as Desitin or Boudreaux's Butt Paste) provide the strongest barrier protection
  • Consult your pediatrician before using any medicated cream or hydrocortisone on an infant
