Use an electronic stud finder

4

Calibrate the device against the wall per its instructions, then slide it horizontally. It will indicate stud edges or centers with lights and sound. Mark both edges of the stud with a pencil and verify by scanning at a different height.

Why It Works

Edge-finding models detect changes in wall density. Center-finding models use radar to locate the stud's midpoint. Multi-scanner models also detect metal pipes, live AC wiring, and wood behind plaster walls.

Tips

  • Calibrate on a section of wall you know is hollow (between studs), not over a stud
  • Move slowly and steadily in one direction — jerky movements cause false readings
  • Basic edge-finders cost $15-25 and work well on standard drywall
  • Multi-scanners ($30-60) are worth it for plaster walls or when you need to detect wiring
  • Always scan twice to confirm — if the device marks the same spot both times, you have a stud
