Use the formula feeding volume guide by age

5

Formula-fed babies need measured amounts that increase with age. In the first week, offer 1-2 oz per feeding every 2-3 hours. By 1 month, most babies take 3-4 oz every 3-4 hours. At 2-4 months, this increases to 4-6 oz per feeding. From 4-6 months, babies typically consume 6-8 oz per feeding, 4-5 times daily, totaling 24-32 oz per day. The AAP advises against exceeding 32 oz of formula per day.

Why It Works

Formula is digested more slowly than breast milk, so formula-fed babies typically feed less frequently but take larger volumes per session. The graduated increase matches the baby's growing stomach capacity and caloric needs. Following volume guidelines prevents both underfeeding and overfeeding.

Tips

  • Always follow the mixing instructions on the formula container — never dilute or concentrate formula
  • Pace bottle feeding by holding the bottle at a shallow angle and allowing pauses, which prevents overfeeding
  • Discard any formula remaining in the bottle after a feeding — bacteria from saliva multiply quickly
  • If your baby consistently finishes bottles and still seems hungry, increase by 1 oz rather than jumping to larger volumes
  • Prepared formula is safe at room temperature for up to 2 hours; refrigerated prepared formula should be used within 24 hours
