Optimize room lighting to reduce screen glare
4
Balance your room lighting so the screen is not the brightest or dimmest object in your field of view. A large contrast between a glowing screen and a dark room forces your pupils to constantly adjust, accelerating fatigue.
Steps
- Add ambient light behind or beside your monitor so the room brightness roughly matches the screen.
- Control window glare with blinds or curtains positioned to block direct sunlight on the screen.
- Use a desk lamp aimed at documents or your keyboard, not at the screen or your face.
- Avoid overhead fluorescent tubes directly above the monitor -- they create reflections on the display surface.
Tips
- A bias light (LED strip behind the monitor) is an inexpensive way to reduce perceived contrast
- Matte screen protectors eliminate reflections if repositioning is not possible
- Warm-tone bulbs (2700-3000K) are easier on the eyes than cool daylight bulbs in the evening
