Optimize room lighting to reduce screen glare

4

Balance your room lighting so the screen is not the brightest or dimmest object in your field of view. A large contrast between a glowing screen and a dark room forces your pupils to constantly adjust, accelerating fatigue.

Steps

  1. Add ambient light behind or beside your monitor so the room brightness roughly matches the screen.
  2. Control window glare with blinds or curtains positioned to block direct sunlight on the screen.
  3. Use a desk lamp aimed at documents or your keyboard, not at the screen or your face.
  4. Avoid overhead fluorescent tubes directly above the monitor -- they create reflections on the display surface.

Tips

  • A bias light (LED strip behind the monitor) is an inexpensive way to reduce perceived contrast
  • Matte screen protectors eliminate reflections if repositioning is not possible
  • Warm-tone bulbs (2700-3000K) are easier on the eyes than cool daylight bulbs in the evening
