Fixing Squeaky Doors

Squeaky doors are caused by friction between hinge components, usually from dried-out lubrication, loose screws, or corroded pins. The fix depends on the root cause: lubrication for dry hinges, tightening for loose hardware, or cleaning for corroded parts.

Common Causes

  • Dry or unlubricated hinge pins and knuckles
  • Loose hinge screws that allow movement and metal-on-metal contact
  • Rust or corrosion buildup on hinge pins
  • Paint or debris trapped in hinge joints

Choosing a Fix

Start by identifying the cause. If hinges look dry, lubricate them. If the door sags or shifts, check for loose screws first. For persistent squeaks after lubrication, remove the hinge pin and clean off rust or old residue before reapplying lubricant.

Important Note on Lubricants

WD-40 is a penetrant and solvent, not a long-term lubricant. It displaces moisture and loosens rust but evaporates quickly. For lasting results, use silicone spray, white lithium grease, or graphite powder.
