Banh Mi (Bánh Mì - Vietnamese Sandwich)

Recipe & Instructions (US Units)

Ingredients:

  • 1 Vietnamese baguette (or light, crusty French baguette), split lengthwise
  • Protein options (choose one or combine):
    • Vietnamese pork roll (Cha Lua)
    • Grilled pork (Thit Nuong - see Bun Cha recipe base)
    • Shredded chicken
    • Fried eggs
    • Sardines in tomato sauce
    • Fried tofu
  • Condiments & Fillings:
    • Mayonnaise (Japanese Kewpie or regular)
    • Pâté (optional, chicken or pork liver)
    • Maggi seasoning sauce or soy sauce
    • Pickled daikon and carrots (Do Chua): Julienne daikon and carrots, soak in a mixture of 1 part vinegar, 1 part sugar, 2 parts water, pinch of salt for at least 30 mins.
    • Cucumber, thinly sliced lengthwise
    • Fresh cilantro sprigs
    • Sliced jalapeños or chilies

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Baguette: Lightly toast the baguette until warm and slightly crispy.
  2. Layer Condiments: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of the inside of the baguette and pâté (if using) on the other.
  3. Add Protein: Layer your chosen protein(s) onto the bottom half of the baguette.
  4. Drizzle Sauce: Drizzle Maggi seasoning or soy sauce over the protein.
  5. Add Pickles & Vegetables: Generously layer the pickled daikon and carrots, cucumber slices, cilantro sprigs, and jalapeño slices over the protein.
  6. Close & Serve: Close the sandwich firmly. Slice in half if desired and serve immediately.
