Units:
Prep: 10 min Cook: 10 min
Ingredients
lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 hamburger buns
1 tbsp vegetable oil or butter (optional)
Toppings (choose your own)
cheese slices (cheddar, American)
lettuce, tomato slices, onion slices
pickles
ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise

The most iconic American food. Its brilliance lies in simplicity and infinite customizability — juicy beef with a flavorful sear, soft bun, and whatever toppings suit your mood. A staple at backyard barbecues, diners, and family cookouts that symbolizes casual American dining at its finest.

Instructions

  1. Divide beef into 4 equal portions (6 oz each). Form into ¾-inch thick patties. Press a shallow indentation in the center with your thumb.
  2. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper just before cooking.
  3. Grill over medium-high heat 4-5 minutes per side for medium, or pan-fry in a hot skillet with oil 4-6 minutes per side. Add cheese during the last minute.
  4. Toast buns on the grill or skillet during the last minute.
  5. Assemble patties on bottom buns with your choice of toppings and condiments.
  6. Serve immediately.

Tips

  • The 80/20 fat ratio is key — leaner beef makes dry, crumbly burgers
  • Handle the meat as little as possible; overworking makes tough patties
  • The thumb indentation prevents the burger from puffing into a dome
