Add a small amount of mild detergent
4
Add 1 teaspoon of mild liquid detergent per basin of water and swirl to dissolve before submerging garments. Use a detergent formulated for delicates or hand washing. Baby shampoo works as a substitute in a pinch.
Why It Works
Hand-wash detergents produce fewer suds and lack the harsh enzymes and alkaline boosters found in regular machine detergents. A small amount is sufficient because hand washing uses far less water than a machine cycle. Excess detergent is difficult to rinse out by hand and leaves residue that stiffens fabric and can irritate skin — a particular concern with children's clothing.
Tips
- Less is more — if the water is very sudsy, you used too much
- Always dissolve detergent fully before adding clothes for even distribution
- Avoid dish soap, which can strip fabric finishes and is too harsh for most garments
