Add hydrogen peroxide to the wash cycle
4
Add 1 cup of 3% household hydrogen peroxide to the washing machine drum before loading clothes, or pour it into the bleach dispenser. For targeted treatment, mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water and soak the item for up to 30 minutes before washing.
Why It Works
Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and nascent oxygen, which oxidizes the chromophores causing yellowing. It is the same active bleaching agent released by sodium percarbonate, delivered in direct liquid form. At household 3% concentration, it is gentle enough for both cotton and linen.
Tips
- Do not soak longer than 30 minutes, as extended contact can weaken fibers
- Works on both cotton and linen at 3% concentration
- Test on an inconspicuous area first if the fabric is old or delicate
- Store hydrogen peroxide away from light, as it degrades over time
