Pre-treat grass stains with vinegar or rubbing alcohol
3
Apply a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water to the grass stain, or dab rubbing alcohol directly onto it. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then wash in cold water. For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water and scrub gently before washing.
Why It Works
Grass stains are a combination of chlorophyll, proteins, and other organic compounds. Vinegar's acidity and alcohol's solvent properties break down chlorophyll molecules and dissolve the binding proteins, loosening the stain so detergent can lift it out during washing.
Tips
- Rubbing alcohol is more effective than vinegar for set-in grass stains
- Avoid hot water, which can set the protein components of the stain
- Treat grass stains the same day they happen for best results
- Enzyme-based pre-treaters containing protease also work well on grass stains
