Wash heavily soiled items separately
4
Keep mud-caked, grease-stained, or heavily sweaty items out of the regular load. Wash them in a separate batch with a heavier-duty cycle and warmer water so the dirt doesn't redistribute onto cleaner clothes.
Why It Works
Washing machines have a limited capacity to suspend soil in the water. When the water becomes saturated with dirt, it redeposits grime onto other garments. Heavily soiled items also need more agitation and longer wash times that would be excessive for lightly worn clothes.
Tips
- Pre-treat visible stains before loading heavily soiled items
- Shake off loose mud or dirt outdoors before putting items in the hamper
- Work clothes and kids' sports uniforms are the most common candidates for this separate load
