Soak persistently smelly items in oxygen bleach
4
Dissolve 1-2 scoops of oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) in a basin of hot water (50-60°C / 120-140°F). Submerge the smelly items and soak for 2-6 hours or overnight, then wash normally.
Why It Works
Oxygen bleach releases hydrogen peroxide in hot water, a powerful oxidizer that destroys the organic compounds causing odor — bacterial waste products, trapped body oils, and embedded sweat residue. The extended soak time allows it to penetrate deeper than a standard wash cycle.
Tips
- Hot water is required for full activation — lukewarm water significantly reduces effectiveness
- Safe for most colors and fabrics, unlike chlorine bleach
- OxiClean, OxoBrite, and store-brand "oxy" products all contain the same active ingredient (sodium percarbonate)
- For gym clothes with persistent odor, a monthly overnight soak prevents buildup
