Provide at least 4-6 square feet of coop floor space per duck
Build or buy a duck shelter with at least 4 square feet of floor space per standard-sized duck, and 6 square feet for large breeds like Pekins and Rouens. Ducks do not roost on bars like chickens — they sleep in a pile on the floor, so every inch of floor space matters. The coop must be large enough for the entire flock to lie down comfortably without piling on top of each other.
Why It Works
Overcrowding in a duck coop causes rapid moisture and ammonia buildup because ducks produce far wetter droppings than chickens. Wet, confined conditions breed aspergillosis (a dangerous fungal respiratory infection) and bumblefoot (a staph infection of the feet). Adequate space also reduces stress-related aggression and allows lower-ranking ducks to escape bullying.
Tips
- Ducks often prefer sleeping outdoors in good weather — the coop primarily provides nighttime predator protection and extreme weather shelter
- A simple 4x8 foot shed-style structure comfortably houses 6–8 standard ducks
- No roosting bars needed — ducks sleep on the floor, preferably on deep bedding
- Nesting areas should be ground-level corners with extra-deep straw or shavings for egg laying
