Use deep litter or an easy-clean floor for wet droppings
4
Manage the inevitably wet floor with either deep litter (4–6 inches of pine shavings, adding fresh layers regularly) or a hard, scrubable surface like sealed concrete or vinyl flooring over plywood. Duck droppings are roughly 90% water — far wetter than chicken manure — so bedding management is the biggest maintenance challenge in duck keeping.
Why It Works
Deep litter works by absorbing moisture into the carbon-rich shavings while beneficial microbes begin composting the lower layers. This reduces odor and generates gentle heat. The alternative — a hard floor that can be scraped, hosed, and dried — works best for smaller coops where full cleanouts take only minutes. Both methods prevent the standing moisture that causes aspergillosis and bumblefoot.
Tips
- Pine shavings are the best deep litter material for ducks — straw mats flat and traps moisture underneath
- Turn deep litter 2–3 times weekly to prevent anaerobic pockets and ammonia spikes
- Vinyl flooring or pond liner over plywood creates a waterproof, scrubable surface that protects the wood from rot
- Full deep litter cleanouts are needed every 3–6 months depending on flock size and season
- Compost used duck bedding for 2–3 months before garden use — fresh duck manure is very nitrogen-rich
