Use a stock tank for a more durable swimming option

4

Install a livestock stock tank (galvanized metal or heavy-duty plastic, $50–$200) for a more durable and spacious swimming option than a kiddie pool. Stock tanks hold 50–300 gallons depending on size, accommodate more ducks, and last for years. A 100-gallon Rubbermaid stock tank comfortably serves 4–6 ducks and is the most popular choice for backyard flocks.

Why It Works

Stock tanks are designed for livestock use and handle the UV exposure, constant water contact, and physical abuse that destroy kiddie pools within a season or two. Their depth (typically 18–24 inches) allows full diving and dabbling that shallow pools cannot. Adding a drain plug on the bottom (drill and install a standard 1-inch bulkhead fitting) makes daily water changes far easier than lifting and dumping.

Tips

  • Install a drain plug connected to a hose that directs dirty water to garden beds or a drain area
  • Build a simple ramp from a non-slip board or textured rubber mat for heavy breeds and ducklings
  • Scrub the interior weekly with a stiff brush to prevent algae and biofilm buildup
  • In freezing climates, use a stock tank de-icer ($30–50) to keep water liquid
