Build a small lined pond for a permanent water feature

4

Construct a small backyard pond (50–200 square feet) using a 45-mil EPDM rubber pond liner for a permanent, natural-looking swimming area. Dig the pond with sloped sides for easy duck entry and exit, line the bottom with sand or old carpet as underlayment to protect the liner, and edge with flat stones or pavers. A pond this size can serve 6–12 ducks comfortably.

Why It Works

A properly built pond provides the most natural water environment for ducks, allowing full diving, dabbling, and foraging behavior. The larger water volume stays cleaner longer than small containers because dilution reduces waste concentration. However, ducks will still foul the water rapidly — a pond serving 6+ ducks without filtration needs partial water changes weekly or will become a green, smelly mess.

Tips

  • Use 45-mil EPDM rubber liner, not PVC — EPDM is UV-stable and lasts 20+ years; PVC cracks within a few years
  • Install a bottom drain connected to a garden hose for easy partial water changes
  • Fish pond filters are undersized for duck waste — duck ponds produce 5–10x the nitrogen load of fish ponds
  • Include a shallow end (6–8 inches) and a deep end (18–24 inches) for variety
  • Budget $200–$500 for a basic 100 sq ft lined pond with edging
