Use nipple drinkers as a supplemental clean water source

2

Install poultry nipple drinkers on a bucket or PVC pipe system to provide a source of clean drinking water that ducks cannot contaminate with mud and droppings. Nipple drinkers release water when the duck pecks the pin, keeping the supply clean indefinitely. However, nipple drinkers cannot replace open water — ducks must always have separate containers deep enough for full head submersion.

Why It Works

Ducks foul open water containers within minutes of each refill by washing food, mud, and droppings into them. Nipple drinkers eliminate this contamination cycle, ensuring clean water is always available even when the open waterer is dirty. This reduces bacterial exposure and the frequency of water changes needed. However, nipple drinkers do not allow head-dipping, which ducks need to keep their eyes and nostrils healthy.

Tips

  • Always provide open, deep water alongside nipple drinkers — nipple drinkers alone are not sufficient for ducks
  • Mount nipple drinkers at duck head height so they can easily activate the pin
  • Some ducks take several days to learn nipple drinkers — tap the nipple in front of them to demonstrate
  • A simple setup: drill horizontal nipples into the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket and hang it at head height ($10–15 total cost)
