Use shallow, drown-proof waterers for young ducklings

5

Provide water in shallow containers that allow ducklings to submerge their bills and nostrils but prevent them from climbing in and becoming waterlogged. Standard chick waterers work well for the first week. For older ducklings, use deeper containers with marbles or clean pebbles placed inside to prevent full submersion. Ducklings are irresistibly drawn to water but can drown or become fatally chilled if soaked before their waterproofing develops.

Why It Works

Duckling down is not waterproof — it absorbs water like a sponge. In the wild, the mother duck's preen oil transfers to ducklings during brooding, providing temporary waterproofing. Brooder-raised ducklings lack this protection until their own preen gland develops at 4–6 weeks. A waterlogged duckling loses body heat rapidly and can die from hypothermia within an hour. Shallow waterers with displacement objects allow essential bill-dipping while preventing dangerous full-body soaking.

Tips

  • Water must be deep enough for full bill submersion (at least 2 inches) so ducklings can clear their nostrils
  • Place waterers on a wire rack or tray to catch the enormous amount of splash — ducklings are incredibly messy with water
  • Clean and refill waterers 3–5 times daily; ducklings fill them with food and bedding within minutes
  • Remove waterers from the brooder overnight after the first week to keep bedding drier (ducklings can safely go 8–10 hours without water)
