Introduce supervised swimming gradually after 1-2 weeks

4

Offer short, supervised swim sessions in lukewarm (about 85°F) shallow water starting at 1–2 weeks old. Begin with just 5–10 minutes in a paint roller tray or shallow dish with water no deeper than 1 inch. Dry ducklings thoroughly afterward with a towel and return them immediately to the warm brooder. Gradually increase swim duration and water depth as ducklings grow feathers and develop waterproofing.

Why It Works

Swimming is essential for duckling development — it strengthens legs, encourages preening behavior that distributes natural oils, and provides enrichment that reduces stress. However, ducklings under 4–6 weeks lack functional waterproofing because their preen gland is immature. Without supervision, they become waterlogged, exhausted, and hypothermic within 15–20 minutes. Supervised sessions provide the developmental benefits while managing the drowning and chilling risks.

Tips

  • Never leave ducklings unattended during swim time — even in shallow water, an exhausted duckling can drown
  • Provide a textured ramp or towel draped over the edge so ducklings can exit the water independently
  • By 4–6 weeks, ducklings develop enough waterproofing for longer sessions (30+ minutes)
  • By 7–9 weeks with full feathering, ducklings can swim unsupervised in a kiddie pool with easy exit access
  • Swim time is messy — do it in a bathroom, garage, or outdoors on warm days
