Commercial Drain Cleaner

2

Apply a commercial drain cleaner according to the product label, wait the specified time, and flush with water. Use only when mechanical methods have failed and as a last resort before calling a plumber.

Why It Works

Chemical drain cleaners use caustic (sodium hydroxide), oxidizing (sodium hypochlorite), or enzymatic agents to dissolve organic material, grease, and hair. Caustic and oxidizing cleaners work fast but are aggressive; enzymatic cleaners are slower but gentler on pipes.

Tips

  • Never mix different drain cleaners or combine with bleach or other household chemicals; this can produce toxic fumes
  • Caustic cleaners (Drano, Liquid-Plumr) can damage older metal pipes, garbage disposals, and PVC over time with repeated use
  • Enzymatic cleaners (Green Gobbler, Bio-Clean) are safer for pipes and septic systems but require hours to work
  • Wear rubber gloves and ensure good ventilation when handling chemical cleaners
  • Avoid using chemical cleaners as routine maintenance; they are designed for occasional use on tough clogs
  • If a chemical cleaner fails, do not attempt to plunge or snake the drain until the chemicals are fully flushed to avoid splash-back
