Clogged Kitchen Sink Drain

Kitchen sink drains clog when grease, food scraps, soap residue, and other debris accumulate in the P-trap or drainpipe. Symptoms range from slow drainage to complete blockage, often accompanied by foul odors and standing water.

Common Causes

  • Grease and cooking oil that solidify inside pipes as they cool
  • Food particles pushed past the drain strainer, especially starchy or fibrous scraps like rice, pasta, and coffee grounds
  • Soap scum buildup that narrows the pipe over time
  • Mineral deposits in hard-water areas

Prevention

  • Never pour grease or oil down the drain; collect it in a container and dispose of it in the trash
  • Use a mesh drain strainer to catch food particles
  • Run hot water for 15-30 seconds after each use to flush residue
  • Clean the drain monthly with baking soda and hot water as routine maintenance
