Apply Multiple Thin Coats
4
Apply two or three thin, even coats of paint instead of one heavy coat. Thick paint layers dry unevenly -- the surface skins over while the interior remains wet, leading to cracking, wrinkling, and poor adhesion. Thin coats cure uniformly and build a stronger, more flexible paint film.
How to Apply Thin Coats
- Load the brush or roller with paint, then remove the excess on the edge of the tray or bucket
- Apply in smooth, even strokes without pressing too hard or overloading the surface
- Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next -- check the paint can label for recoat times, typically 2-4 hours for latex
- Two coats over primer is standard; a third coat may be needed when covering dark colors or porous surfaces
Tips
- Use a quality roller cover with the correct nap for your surface -- 3/8 inch for smooth walls, 1/2 inch for textured
- Rolling in a W pattern before back-rolling ensures even distribution
- Resist the temptation to apply one thick coat to save time -- it nearly always results in a worse finish and shorter lifespan
