Adjust the Flush Chain

4

Set the correct amount of slack in the chain between the flush lever and the flapper so the flapper seats fully after each flush.

Why It Works

A chain that is too short holds the flapper slightly open, letting water leak continuously. A chain that is too long can fold under the flapper and prevent a seal. The correct length allows about 1/2 inch of slack when the flapper is closed.

Steps

  1. Remove the tank lid and flush while watching the chain
  2. After the flapper drops, check that the chain goes slack and the flapper sits flat
  3. Rehook the chain to a different hole on the flush lever or move the clip to shorten or lengthen it
  4. Trim any excess chain length that could get caught under the flapper

Tips

  • This fix takes under a minute and requires no tools
  • If the chain is rusty or kinked, replace it for a few dollars at any hardware store
