Adjust the Flush Chain
4
Set the correct amount of slack in the chain between the flush lever and the flapper so the flapper seats fully after each flush.
Why It Works
A chain that is too short holds the flapper slightly open, letting water leak continuously. A chain that is too long can fold under the flapper and prevent a seal. The correct length allows about 1/2 inch of slack when the flapper is closed.
Steps
- Remove the tank lid and flush while watching the chain
- After the flapper drops, check that the chain goes slack and the flapper sits flat
- Rehook the chain to a different hole on the flush lever or move the clip to shorten or lengthen it
- Trim any excess chain length that could get caught under the flapper
Tips
- This fix takes under a minute and requires no tools
- If the chain is rusty or kinked, replace it for a few dollars at any hardware store
