Apply topical corticosteroids (clobetasol)
4
What to Do
Apply clobetasol propionate (a super-potent topical steroid) to bald patches once or twice daily as prescribed. Some dermatologists recommend applying it under occlusion (covered with a shower cap or plastic wrap) overnight for enhanced absorption.
Why It Works
Topical corticosteroids reduce the immune-mediated inflammation attacking hair follicles. Clobetasol is the strongest topical steroid available and can stimulate regrowth in mild to moderate alopecia areata, particularly when injections are not preferred.
Tips
- Do not use continuously for more than 2-4 weeks without a break — prolonged use can thin the skin
- Less effective than injections for thicker patches
- Often used as a bridge treatment between injection sessions
