Use eucalyptus steam inhalation for congestion relief
2
Steps
- Boil water and pour into a large bowl
- Add 3-5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
- Drape a towel over your head and the bowl
- Breathe in the steam for 5-10 minutes with eyes closed
Why It Works
Eucalyptus contains 1,8-cineole, which has mild anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties. A 2020 study found eucalyptus oil may suppress mast cell degranulation. Steam itself loosens mucus and soothes inflamed nasal passages regardless of the oil added.
Tips
- Keep face at least 12 inches from the water to avoid burns
- Avoid if you have asthma — concentrated essential oil vapors can trigger bronchospasm
- Provides temporary symptom relief only; does not treat the underlying allergy
- Do not ingest essential oils
