Vacuum with a HEPA-equipped vacuum twice weekly
4
What to Do
Vacuum all carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture at least twice weekly during allergy season using a vacuum with a sealed HEPA filtration system.
Why It Works
Standard vacuums exhaust fine allergen particles back into the air. A sealed HEPA vacuum traps them effectively. Carpets and upholstery are major pollen and dust mite reservoirs. Two slow passes per area maximizes pickup.
Tips
- Recommended: Miele (bagged, excellent HEPA seal), Dyson, or Shark with HEPA
- Bagged vacuums expose you to less dust during disposal than bagless canisters
- Use the upholstery attachment on fabric sofas and curtains
- Wear an N95 mask while vacuuming if severely allergic, or have someone else do it
