Replace carpet with hard flooring if possible
3
What to Do
Replace wall-to-wall carpet with hard flooring (hardwood, laminate, tile, or vinyl) in bedrooms and main living areas, especially if you have moderate-to-severe allergies.
Why It Works
Carpet is a deep reservoir for pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores that vacuuming alone cannot fully remove. Hard floors can be damp-mopped clean, removing nearly all surface allergens. Studies show significantly lower indoor allergen levels in homes with hard flooring compared to carpeted homes.
Tips
- Prioritize the bedroom first — it provides the most benefit per square foot
- If removing carpet is not feasible, use area rugs that can be washed regularly
- Low-pile carpet is better than high-pile or shag for allergen control
- HEPA vacuum at least twice weekly if carpet must remain
