How deep and what size should a raised bed be?

Raised bed dimensions directly affect plant health, gardener comfort, material cost, and soil volume requirements. Width determines whether you can reach the center without stepping on soil (critical for preventing compaction). Depth determines which crops can develop full root systems. Height affects ergonomics and accessibility. Length is primarily a practical consideration driven by available space and lumber dimensions. Most vegetables need at least 10 inches of soil depth, but root crops and large plants benefit from 16-18 inches. ADA-accessible beds require specific height, width, and pathway dimensions to accommodate wheelchair users. Getting dimensions right from the start avoids costly rebuilds and maximizes the productive lifespan of the bed.
