Patch small bare spots with seed and compost in spring
4
Steps
- Rake out dead grass and debris from the bare spot.
- Loosen the top 1-2 inches of soil with a garden rake or cultivator.
- Spread grass seed matching your lawn type at the rate on the bag.
- Cover lightly with a quarter-inch layer of compost or topsoil.
- Tamp gently with your foot or the flat side of the rake.
- Water lightly twice daily until seedlings are 2 inches tall.
Why It Works
Loosening the soil gives seeds direct contact with dirt, and the compost layer holds moisture around the seed. Small patches (under 3 sq ft) can establish in spring because they do not require skipping pre-emergent on the entire lawn.
Tips
- Skip pre-emergent only on the patched area — apply it normally to the rest of the lawn.
- Avoid walking on the patch for 3-4 weeks.
