Identify your current grass species and buy seed that matches. If you have tall fescue, buy tall fescue seed. If you have Kentucky bluegrass, buy KBG seed or a KBG-dominant blend.

Why It Works

Mismatched grass types create visible patches of different color, texture, and growth rate. A Kentucky bluegrass patch in a fescue lawn will look like a light green blotch, and vice versa. Matching seed ensures a uniform appearance as the repair fills in.

• Blends (e.g., 3 varieties of tall fescue) are better than single varieties because they provide genetic diversity for disease resistance.
• Avoid cheap "contractor mixes" that contain annual ryegrass — it looks different and dies in a year.
