Remove snow mold patches by light raking
4
Once snow melts and reveals circular matted patches of gray-white or pinkish grass, gently rake the affected areas to break up the matted growth and improve airflow.
Why It Works
Snow mold fungi (Typhula for gray, Microdochium nivale for pink) thrive under prolonged snow cover. Breaking up the matted turf allows the grass crowns underneath to dry out and begin recovery. Most snow mold is cosmetic and grass recovers on its own once conditions improve.
Tips
- Fertilize lightly after raking to encourage new growth into the damaged areas.
- Reduce fall mowing height and avoid late-fall nitrogen to prevent snow mold next year.
