Pull out the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Clean underneath and behind them thoroughly, removing grease, crumbs, and moisture. Clean under and behind the microwave, toaster, and any small countertop appliances. Repeat monthly during active infestations.

The warm, dark, moist spaces behind kitchen appliances are the primary harborage for German cockroaches. Grease buildup behind stoves and food debris under refrigerators provide concentrated food sources that sustain colonies even when the rest of the kitchen is clean. Removing these hidden food sources forces cockroaches to forage more widely, increasing their contact with baits.

Tips

• German cockroaches prefer warm areas — the motor compartment of the refrigerator is a common nesting spot
• Do not leave pet food and water bowls out overnight
• Store all food in sealed containers, including dry goods
• Take out garbage daily during active infestations
