Use BTI dunks in water features and rain barrels

5

What to Do

Place BTI mosquito dunks in any standing water that cannot be drained — rain barrels, ornamental ponds, birdbaths, drainage ditches, tree holes, and animal watering troughs. Each dunk treats up to 100 square feet of water surface for 30 days. Break into pieces for smaller containers.

Why It Works

Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is a naturally occurring bacterium that is deadly to mosquito larvae but completely harmless to people, pets, fish, birds, and other wildlife. The EPA confirms Bti has no toxicity to non-target organisms. Larviciding is more efficient than adulticiding according to university extension services (UGA, Purdue, Iowa State).

Tips

  • Safe for use in organic farming, birdbaths, rain barrels, and animal drinking water
  • Bti only affects fly larvae — it will not harm beneficial insects, fish, or aquatic organisms
  • Replace dunks monthly during mosquito season
  • Cost: $10-15 for a 6-pack that lasts an entire season
