Seal cracks and gaps around doors and windows
5
What to Do
Caulk cracks around door frames, window frames, and where utilities enter the home. Install or repair weather stripping on doors and windows. Add door sweeps to fill gaps under exterior doors. Repair or replace damaged window screens.
Why It Works
Sealing entry points is the most effective long-term spider control strategy according to university extension services. Spiders enter homes through the same gaps as the insects they hunt. Blocking these entry points reduces both spider access and the insect prey that attracts them. Unlike chemical treatments that wear off, physical exclusion is permanent.
Tips
- Check soffit vents and eaves for gaps or damaged screening
- Seal gaps around baseboards and utility line penetrations inside the home
- This single step reduces pressure from spiders, ants, cockroaches, and most crawling pests simultaneously
- Most effective when done in early fall before spiders move indoors seeking mates and shelter
