Seal entry points with copper mesh and caulk
5
What to Do
Inspect the full perimeter of your home for gaps larger than 1/4 inch (mice) or 1/2 inch (rats). Stuff copper mesh tightly into each gap, then seal over the top with caulk or mortar. Focus on pipe penetrations, foundation cracks, garage door seals, dryer vents, and where rooflines meet siding.
Why It Works
Trapping is temporary — exclusion is the permanent solution. New rodents will continue entering through the same gaps unless they are sealed. Copper mesh is rust-proof and rodent-proof. Sealing over the mesh with caulk prevents rodents from pulling it out. Expanding foam alone is useless — rats chew through it easily.
Tips
- Use a flashlight from inside dark areas and look for daylight coming through gaps
- Steel wool works but rusts when wet and can stain surfaces — copper mesh is the better long-term option
- Check where utility lines enter the building — these gaps are frequently overlooked
- Replace damaged dryer vent louvers with heavy-duty metal vents
