Reduce outdoor lighting that attracts prey insects
4
What to Do
Switch exterior lights to yellow or sodium vapor bulbs, which attract fewer insects than standard white bulbs. Move porch lights to the sides of doorways rather than directly above them. Use motion-activated lights instead of leaving lights on continuously.
Why It Works
Spiders build webs near light sources because lights attract the flying insects they feed on. Reducing the insect congregation around your home reduces the food supply that draws spiders in. Yellow and sodium vapor bulbs produce wavelengths that are less visible to most insects.
Tips
- LED warm-white bulbs (2700K) attract fewer insects than cool-white or daylight bulbs
- Moving lights to the sides of doors draws the insect swarm away from the actual entry point
- Close curtains at night to prevent indoor light from attracting insects to windows
- This also reduces attraction for other pests like moths, beetles, and earwigs
- Cost: minimal — just replacing bulbs
