Seal entry points to prevent nesting in walls
5
Steps
- In late fall or winter (after colonies die), inspect your home's exterior for gaps, cracks, and openings larger than 1/8 inch
- Seal gaps around utility pipes, vents, and soffits with steel wool and caulk
- Repair torn window screens and install fine mesh over attic vents
- Re-inspect in early spring before queens begin scouting for nest sites
Why It Works
Wasps nest inside wall voids and attics when they find easy access points. Sealing entry points in the off-season forces queens to nest elsewhere. This is a permanent fix rather than a yearly spray.
Tips
- Never seal an entry point while a colony is active inside — trapped wasps may chew through drywall into living spaces
- Pay special attention to where siding meets the foundation and around roof overhangs
