Treat pet, indoor, and outdoor zones simultaneously
5
What to Do
On the same day, treat all three zones: apply flea preventive to all pets, spray indoor carpets and furniture with an IGR + adulticide, and treat shaded yard areas where pets spend time. Coordinate these treatments to happen within the same 24-hour period.
Why It Works
Fleas cycle between pet, indoor, and outdoor environments. Treating only one zone leaves the others as a reservoir that re-infests the treated area within days. The three-zone simultaneous approach is the standard protocol recommended by veterinary entomologists and eliminates reintroduction pathways.
Tips
- This is the single most important strategy for eliminating a flea infestation — partial treatment is the #1 reason fleas persist
- Even if you only see fleas on your pet, eggs have already been deposited indoors
- Mark your calendar: retreatment of outdoor areas may be needed in 3-4 weeks, but indoor IGR lasts months
