Use the two-step broadcast method for fire ants

Steps

1. Broadcast a slow-acting bait (hydramethylnon or methoprene-based granules) across the entire yard using a broadcast spreader, 2-3 times per year.
2. Wait 3-7 days for bait to take effect.
3. Treat individual problem mounds near high-traffic areas with a contact insecticide drench or dust.

Why It Works

Mississippi State and UF/IFAS Extension developed this method because treating individual mounds is ineffective — when large colonies are eliminated, small developing colonies thrive in the vacated space. Broadcast baiting reaches all colonies, including hidden ones, achieving 80-90% control.

Tips

• Apply when ground temperature is 60-90°F and ants are actively foraging (test by placing a potato chip near a mound)
• Best timing: late spring and early fall
• Never pour gasoline, boiling water, or grits on mounds — these are ineffective and dangerous
• Fire ant stings can cause severe allergic reactions — carry an EpiPen if you have a known allergy
