Assess whether nest removal is actually necessary
5
What to Do
Before taking action, determine if the nest actually poses a risk. Solitary wasps and paper wasps nesting away from high-traffic areas are beneficial predators that eat garden pests. Only nests near doorways, play areas, or allergy-prone household members require removal.
Why It Works
Most wasp species are not aggressive unless their nest is disturbed. Unnecessary removal eliminates free pest control and increases sting risk during the removal attempt itself.
Tips
- Paper wasps with open-comb nests high under eaves are generally docile unless touched
- Yellow jackets nesting in the ground near walkways do warrant removal — they're defensive and sting repeatedly
- Nests die off naturally each winter in temperate climates, so late-season nests can often be left alone
