Watch for physical signs that laying is imminent

3

Look for visible physical changes that indicate a hen is about to start laying. The comb and wattles become larger, brighter red, and waxy-looking as estrogen levels rise. The pelvic bones (felt just above the vent) widen to about two finger-widths apart. The hen may begin squatting submissively when you approach, exploring nesting boxes, and becoming more vocal with a distinctive "egg song."

Why It Works

These physical changes are driven by the same hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that trigger ovulation. Comb reddening and growth indicate rising estrogen levels. Pelvic bone widening creates space for the egg to pass through the oviduct. The submissive squat is a mating posture that appears when the hen reaches sexual maturity. These signs reliably predict first eggs within 1–2 weeks.

Tips

  • Place ceramic or wooden fake eggs in nesting boxes before the first real egg — this teaches pullets where to lay
  • A hen exploring boxes and rearranging bedding is days away from her first egg
  • The "egg song" (loud, repetitive bawk-bawk-bawk-BAGAWK) often starts before laying begins
  • First eggs frequently appear on the coop floor; redirect the hen to the nesting box by placing her there gently
