Rhode Island Red — reliable brown eggs and hardiness

5

Rhode Island Reds are one of the most popular backyard breeds, laying 250-280 large brown eggs per year with excellent hardiness in both hot and cold climates. They are dual-purpose birds (good for eggs and meat) with a reputation for being low-maintenance and vigorous foragers.

Why It Works

RIRs are the standard recommendation for beginners because they combine high production, climate adaptability, disease resistance, and foraging ability. Heritage strains are slightly less productive but longer-lived than production strains.

Tips

  • Can be assertive or dominant within a mixed flock — watch for bullying of more docile breeds
  • Production strains lay more eggs but burn out faster (2-3 years); heritage strains lay steadily for 4-5 years
  • Roosters can be aggressive — hens-only flocks are recommended for most backyards
